Change! (Shin) Getter Robo

Best Vocal Collection 1500

Review by: Tom Riffel

Anime Series Soundtrack

Company: Meldac

CD Length: 25 Minutes

Rated: PG-13

EXTERNAL EXAM

Go Nagai’s Getter Robo series has resurfaced time and again since the 1970s. Beginning with the original series and its sequels, and including retellings and wacky match ups (Getter Robo Vs Mazinger Z), the franchise is much loved in Japan. Of course, the series has several music soundtracks, and 1999’s “Change! Shin Getter Robo” is no exception.

FINAL EXAM:

As stated by the name, this specially priced album contains only vocal songs, six to be precise. “Change! Shin Getter Robo” has two original soundtracks to go with this vocal collection, and so this album might come up quite short musically compared to previous two. Though it is short, it contains all the openings and endings from the series, and includes a couple of songs that are interspersed throughout the series’ thirteen episodes.

Best track

Heats: The album starts off with probably the best track, “Heats“. The entire thing is like the show: over the top, dynamic, and exciting. It’s chock full of electronic sounds, but also has traditional rock instruments. The bass shines as it gallops through the verses, and everything explodes at the chorus, creating a high energy, uplifting song. The vocals are a bit cheesy, but again, the song maintains the feeling of the animation.

Worst Track

Yakusoku no Oka: Ending this short album is another slow, mushy song, again sung by a woman. It is very slow, even slower than “Misty”, but the vocals are better here. Of all the songs, this one is the most synthetic. The drums are looped, and all the instruments, with the exception of the guitar, sound like they were played off of one keyboard. Honestly, this song is a decent way to wrap up the album, but its just not a great song. It is overshadowed by every other song on the album.

Perfect for Fans of:

Any ass kicking giant robo theme, JAM Project.

So there it is, six songs in twenty-five minutes. With only one real dud (“Yakusoku no Oka”), this album is completely worth it for fans of Getter Robo, especially the over the top sequel series this album came from, “Change! Shin Getter Robo”. Most of the songs keep the feel and energy of the show (“Heats”, “Ima ga Sono Toki da”, “Burn the Run”), the album slows it down a bit for two of the songs (“Misty”, “Yakusoku no Oka”), that lose that energy, but do not really damage the overall quality. As a specially priced album, you can get your hands on this for the cost of a domestic album, and if you love Getter Robo, there's no reason not to.
