SUMMARY

SPT Layzner is one of the lesser known "Giant Robot" series from Japan. While having inspired mecha designs and plenty of action, it never seemed to catch on to the popularity brought on by "Zeta Gundam".

The series starts on the surface of Mars, the latest bone of contention between the US and Russia. Little do they realize that the alien world of Gurados has plans for invasion of the solar system. A group of students known as the "Cosmic Culture Club" is caught up in a war they don't understand. Their only help is from a mysterious pilot named Eiji, who claims to be a soldier from Gurados. He pilots an experimental Super Powered Tracer called Layzner, assisted by his on board computer, Rei.

The first 24 episodes cover the CCC escape from Mars back to Earth, and the aftermath of their arrival. After a summary episode in episode 25, the rest of the series fast forwards to 2001. Now, Gurados has won and the Earth is under their control. Eiji and the ex members of the CCC form a resistance movement, with the Layzner as the centerpiece.

While having enjoyed the success of fan favorite "Zeta Gundam" and "Dirty Pair", Sunrise expected "SPT Layzner" to really take off. Unfortunately, the series didn't seem to draw in the viewers and it was cut from 50 episodes to 38, making the story incomprehensible and the ending confusing. A three series OVA was created. The first two cover the entire series while the third one expands on the finial episodes.
