EXTERNAL EXAM
From Tofu Records comes some of the hippest music ever to come out of Japan. Neo Soul features 13 cool tracks of R&B/Hip-hop from the biggest stars. From the smooth jams of Toshi Kubota, to old school rap by Rhymester, Neo Soul will keep you groovin'!
FINAL EXAM:
No
Lights...Candle Light: Toshi Kubota
Flavor: Sexy The first song is a slow jam that was predominately featured in the Naoko Iijima movie "Messengers". Toshi Kubota did most of the soundtrack, and this song helped to set the modern tone of the story. His smooth vocals and sultry music really make this track a good one to help your lady in the mood! |
Fortune:
Sowelu
Flavor: Smooth Sowelu's sound is a cross between Utada Hikaru and Misia, only slower. While she may not be able to carry off the vocal pyrotechnics that her contemporaries can, her soulful voice added with a great slow jam, will help keep that mood from the first track going. |
| Song of Happiness: amon
Flavor: Up beat This very up tempo song by amon is a nice make out tune. It's strong backbeat really will get them hips moving, and put a smile on your face. If you have not closed the deal by this song, you are way off your game! |
Point of No Return: CHEMISTRY
Flavor: Whinny This slow jam is marred by the whinny voice of the lead singer. The music tries to push the beat faster, but the lead singer can't or won't catch up. He stays in whinny mode throughout the entire song. The addition of a male duet partner doesn't work either. |
Candy:
Crystal Kay
Flavor: Happy Crystal Kay reminds me a lot of early Utada Hikaru. Her strong voice combined with the groovin' beat really works. Candy is the perfect name for this song. It's a sweet treat that makes you smile. |
STEP
TO THE NEW WORLD: SOULHEAD
Flavor: Funky Taking this up several notches is the cool retro-funk sound of SOULHEAD. Combining Disco with the vocal abilities of En-Vogue would be tough for anyone. Not only does SOULHEAD do it, they do it better than former super duo "Double". |
| Curious: Miss Monday
Flavor: Nippon Rappu Well, if you are looking for some hardcore female Japanese rappers, then Miss Monday will knock you out! If your not, hit the skip button. Her flow is pretty good, but the "refrain" is a little on the annoying side. The backing track is strong with the beat, and not much else. Still, she is right up there with Goku and Rhymester for lyrical ability. Word to ya mutha! |
| I shut you down: Goku
Flavor: Yakuza Rappu The second rap track on this album, "I shut you down" is an awesome "run from the law" song. With the jazz inspired backtrack along with the strong vocals of the lead singer is a perfect mix. You will find yourself driving fast and furious with this one. |
| Jump: MICHICO
Flavor: Soul Sista MICHICO sounds very much like early Destiny's Child. It's repetitive backing track along with her fairly solid vocals makes it pretty much a typical DC song. |
Y.E.N:
RhymesterFlavor: Old School Rhymester is one of the premier rap groups in Japan. Hitting the scene with D.J. Krush, Zebra, and Squall, Rhymester is among the best out there. They have the smoothest sounding vocals of a Japanese rap group you have ever heard. Y.E.N is about money, and their love of it. It's a old school style beat, with a flow that leaves many wanna be rappers dead on the streat. |
| Dream Drive: SOUL'd OUT Flavor: Stupid It's stupid. It's annoying. It makes people want to erase the track from the CD. If 80's rap group Cameo is looking for a back up group, these idiots will fit the bill. |
| My Life: Loop Junktion Flavor: Groovy Loop Junktion's "My Life" is a decent rap song, similar to the simpler sounds of "Will Smith" when he was just "The Fresh Prince". While it's not bad, and has a groovy beat, it's just not as good as Goku and Rhymester's tracks. |
| Life
Is..:Ken Hirai Flavor: Sappy Not exactly the best song to end a CD with. Ken has a sweet voice, but the overly sappy nature of the song seems out of place with the more upbeat tunes. Still, he is the master at getting the ladies to swoon, so I can't complain to much. |
Destiny's Child, Lady Sovereign, D.J. Krush
Overall, I really enjoyed Neo Soul. While there are a couple of rough spots, you do get a great mix of the R&B scene in Japan. Because this is a promotional CD, there isn't anything in the way of information on the bands presented. I hope that when the official release comes out, they will include a brief history on each of the artists.
If you are looking for something other than anime soundtracks or typical J-Pop, look no further than Neo Soul. With it's great blend of the funky, the fresh, and the free, you and your lady will find yourself getting into the Japanese R&B groove.
