REVIEW:
Okay, I know what you are saying. We are an anime DVD review
site. What the heck are we doing reviewing a book?
Well, for many of us old anime fans, it was books that got us
started. We were not lucky enough to have the plethora of companies
we have today. There was no anime at our local Wal-Mart or
Target. If you were lucky
enough to live near a comic shop that sold imported Japanese items, then
you were the envy of your friends. For us, it was photo books, art books, and other assorted
material that helped stoke the fires of anime.
Anime Poster Art is one such book. With it's wealth of
information, and beautiful pictures, this is one to go right next to your
copy of "The Anime Encyclopedia".
The cover is a little too busy for my taste, compared to their "Cosplay
Girls" book. Yet, the old saying is true; never judge a book by
it's cover.
First up is an introduction by Patrick Macias on the difference between
anime and cartoons. This dissertation was the source of many a
debate at DVJ. While I felt it was a little too militant, our
managing editor sated that it was a very well done piece. Taken
in the context of the book, his points were quite valid and well
organized. I felt that it was a little vulgar in places (hence the
PG rating), and that it could run the risk of alienating newer fans.
No matter your opinion, it is a very through piece.
Next up are some very high quality scan of original posters and
flyers. These are not just some random pictures they snatched off
the net, but original material in pristine condition. Broken down
into 8 eclectic sections (Super Heroes, Leading Ladies, Robot Wars, Spaced
Out, Fantasy Trip, Tall Dark Strangers, Retro-Specs, and Studio Ghibli),
each covers many well known titles that have since become part of our own
anime culture.
I liked the fact that they translated the text on the poster. The
book also provides us with background information on these titles.
At the end of each chapter, there is a brief feature on different aspects
on Anime culture.
With it's high quality pictures, and cool information Anime Poster Art
is truly a great book for any serious anime collector.
